If you don't already know by now, the news has been that you may have a new sun sign. It all began when an astronomer pointed out a fact - that the Zodiac couldn't possibly be the same as it was when it was conjured up 3000 years ago because of earth's axial precession; not surprisingly, newspapers caught on and found some deviant astrologer to provide a humble rebuttal by giving us the new zodiac, with 13 signs and new dates assignments. Leos became Cancers, Saggitarians became Ophiucii and Scorpios, and a lot of people became very very confused.
Back on earth, these signs have influenced personalities, friendships, relationships, careers and health. I can't deny that I myself didn't look forward to daily soothsayings in the newspaper every morning. 3000 years ago, these signs must've been part of a socialistic design where people were brought up in personality moulds so that all members of society has a useful trait. But since we really don't know, this dangerous mix of mysticism and modern individualism has driven these beliefs much deeper into people than just their sunsign tattoos; it is the last remaining religion of the modern multi-cultural multi-faith secular internet-dating societies.
This religion can't be forsaken easily because individual beliefs are absolutely powerful: think Mahatma Gandhi or Steve Jobs. These are so powerful that one would refuse universally accepted logic to protect one's own integrity. I empathize, because when I moved over from being a vedic theist to an athiest as an experiment, my belief system broke down. It was a dark world, where meaning to all words were lost and I was back at the bottom. This was not unlike the exam question where the length of the hypotenuse turns out to be complex. The revelation is shocking and induces panic. While one solution is to go back to the point where all the mistakes were made, and solve the equation correctly, as is the spiritual quest, the other is to memorize a finite set of integral pythagorean triplets and ignore everything else, as is astrology. And we have all used both methods.
I am impressed by this episode because someone brought up science; Yet, it's overall disappointing because after the smoke has cleared, we will still be ready to believe that we are represented by a set of stars light years away through which one can predict our future, when really, what we see when we look at them, is the past.
