Once upon a time, I hung out with a guy named Anirudh, just as regular dudes watching a play. I asked him what he does for fun on weekends, and he had the most boring reply. "I like spending time in the jungles spotting birds and animals", he said. Obviously, I had to tell him what I thought of that, which was that "I don't care much about animals". My world then, was made up of people and everything that they created - animals and plants were just a 'nice' backdrop.
Exactly 5 years later, I'm married to him and we're on a plane headed to the Galapagos Archipelago. If you keep score, I kind of ate my words. Learning about the natural world under his influence, has changed my perspective on everything. Just everything. From coming up with better algorithms and learning how to ferment my fermentables to understanding money and human behavior.
In the Galapagos, I felt like an alien on my own planet. The earth would have been such a beautiful place if we humans didn't exist.
